- almost always bilateral

- strong familial tendency

Extra-articular STJ fusion

- lateral bony block in sinus tarsi

- prevents valgus deformity

- allows undisturbed foot growth

 

Indication

 

Flexible valgus hindfoot in children 4 - 12

Painful restriction of dorsiflexion of the great toe 

- secondary to degenerative changes in MTPJ

- initially pain and synovitis

- osteophytes don't form medially or on plantar aspect
